This fantastic 12-day coach holiday takes us to some of Germany’s most enchanting towns. Relax and enjoy the charms of Koblenz and Cochem as you relish in the picturesque river scenery, along with visiting romantic Heidelberg, historic Rothenburg and the vibrant city of Cologne.

The highlight of the trip is our visit to Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt – the largest wine festival in the world. Sure to be a taste-sensation, visit the large wine halls, traditional stands and cosy wine villages - there’s plenty of varieties to sample!

    Travel to the wine producing town of Ellenz on the Moselle River for a three night stay.

    We enjoy a scenic drive to Koblenz, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. You will be introduced to the key sights of this picturesque town on our included sightseeing tour. During our guided tour we will enjoy a panoramic river cruise on the Rhine. There will be some free time before returning to the hotel.

    We enjoy a leisurely morning as we drive along the Moselle River to the charming wine town of Cochem, dominated by the ancient and mighty Reichsburg Castle, dramatically perched on a hillside overlooking the town.

    This morning we visit the ever-popular ‘wine town’ of Rüdesheim, home to the vibrant ‘Drosselgasse’, a narrow alley lined with restaurants, shops and bars, many playing traditional Rhineland music and the perfect place to enjoy a glass of local wine or beer.

    We later continue to the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt. Although the literal translation is ‘the sausage market’, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt is the largest wine festival in the world. Taking place in the centre of the town, outside the famous giant wine cask, you will have time at leisure to explore everything the festival has to offer; from large wine halls to small traditional wooden stands and the cosy wine village, there are over 150 different varieties of wines to try!

    Today we visit the ancient university town of Heidelberg. The city of Heidelberg enjoys a beautiful location on the banks of the River Neckar. It is often referred to as the ‘Romantic Town’ on account of its castle ruins and red sandstone buildings, which dominate the city. Heidelberg Castle has been described as the most beautiful castle ruin of Germany, and enjoys a prominent location overlooking the town and from where the views across Heidelberg and the Neckar are astounding.

    During our visit we include the funicular to the castle and a tour around the courtyard and the castle garden.

    You have a day at leisure to explore Bad Dürkeim and the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt. The festival originates from the traditional walk of the pilgrims up to the Michaelskapelle (St. Michael’s Chapel) every St. Michael’s Day - and you can still walk the same path to the chapel today!

    We begin the day with a visit to the historic city of Heilbronn. Located on the Neckar River you will have time at leisure to explore the gothic architecture, quaint cafes and spacious parks of one of Germany’s ‘hidden gems’.

    Later we continue to join the famous romantic road as we visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Known for its medieval old town, Rothenburg’s name means red fortress above the Tauber.

    We continue to our hotel in Wurzburg for a three night stay.

    We spend the day in Würzburg, the residence town of the Prince-Bishops beside the Main. We enjoy an included guided walk as we take a journey through the centuries. See Fortress Marienberg, the grand baroque residence and historic heart of the city.

    We include a visit to the historic wine cellar under the world cultural heritage ‘Residenz’ and round off the tour with a glass of Frankenwein. On the journey back to our hotel we pass vineyards and idyllic castles.

    Today we include a full day excursion to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site of Bamberg and Seehof Castle. We head first to Bamberg, known as the ‘Beer City’ or the ‘Franconian Rome’, being built over seven hills. Enjoy our guided city tour to show you the main highlights. With a rich history of 1000 years, Bamberg is a real jewel of Franconia. Explore ‘The Sand’, the oldest part of the city, and the dreamlike island city ‘Little Venice’.

    In the afternoon we head to nearby Memmelsdorf and visit Seehof Castle, which was built in 1686 as the summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg. We include entrance to the castle and a guided tour.

    We leave our hotel this morning and head to the vibrant city of Cologne, which stands on the banks of the romantic River Rhine. During the Second World War around 90 percent of Cologne’s inner city was reduced to rubble. Today, the Rhine metropolis is the fourth largest city and one of the most outstanding travel destinations in Germany and Europe. Cologne Cathedral, famous around the world, dominates the panorama of the city and is still today the second highest building in Cologne after the telecommunications tower. Maybe take time to visit the famous Gothic Cathedral, with its most celebrated work, the Sarcophagus of the Magi, thought to hold the remains of the three wise men. Enjoy some free time to explore the many shops and boutiques before we continue to our overnight hotel in Belgium.

    We are unable to guarantee that the hotel will be able to meet your dietary requirements. We find that the majority of European countries do not generally cater for vegetarians and that the meal supplied may well be what everyone else is having minus the meat.

    We will of course endeavour to arrange for a vegetarian meal at the hotel. We do however suggest that you advise us of your dietary requests at the time of booking and recommend that you speak to the receptionist on arrival with regard to your request.

    You will stay for three nights at the Hotel Ellenzer Goldbaumchen in the wine producing town of Ellenz on the Moselle River; three nights at the Hotel Achat Premium Bad Dürkheim situated in Bad Dürkheim and three nights in the City Partner Hotel Strauss in the heart of the romantic city of Würzburg. Overnight stays in Belgium are in city-style hotels.
