The square's 18th century buildings were constructed in the Baroque style by architect Alberto Churriguera, and many of the town's important buildings such as the cathedral, university, and 'Shells House', can be found nearby. The 'Casa de la Conchas' or 'Shells House' has carved stone scallop shells covering the exterior walls, and was previously the home of Rodrigo Maldonado, a knight of the order of Saint James.
