Taking place every four years, Floralies opens its doors in early May 2020 at Ghent's Citadelpark, drawing inspiration from the great artist Van Eyck. The theme for 2020 is 'My Paradise, a Global Garden'. This flower and plant exhibition showcases some of the finest horticultural treasures. The first exhibition took place in a pub in 1809 where around 50 plants competed for the honour.
Over the years the event has built up a strong reputation for itself as the must-attend exhibition of the horticultural industry in Belgium.
More than 500,000 types of plants and flowers can all be found under one roof, with the indoor gardens spanning over 1.5 hectares. It's no wonder that Ghent is regarded as the 'Flower Capital of Belgium'
This morning, our included excursion takes us to Floralia, the spring flower exhibition in the park and greenhouses at the castle of Groot Bijgaarden. The park, which is approximately 14 hectares in size, incorporates many spring bulb varieties. The castle’s gardeners plant by hand, under direction from The Netherlands, more than one million bulbs. See tulips, lilies, narcissi, daffodils and numerous botanical varieties. A sea of muscari, wild tulips, violets, azaleas and rhododendrons spreads out under the ancient trees.
If you are leaving the tour in Europe, you will say farewell to the group after breakfast this morning. If you joined the tour in the UK, today you will return and continue to your original joining point.
