Sit back and admire the scenery passing by on our drive, climbing Devil's Elbow and across the remote Cairnwell Pass in the heart of the Grampion Mountains. We have a short break at the gates of Balmoral Castle to view Crathie Church, home of many a Royal Wedding, then it's on to Ballater for free time.
Later this afternoon, we head to Braemar, home of 'The Highland Gathering'.
Today, we have an included guided tour of the Scottish capital city. Edinburgh is referred to as the ‘Athens of the North’ and also likened to Rome as it is built on seven hills. It is indeed a classical city in its own right.
Evidence shows there was a tribal stronghold on Castle Rock in 600 BC, where now stands the city’s most dominant feature. The magnificent castle fortress is familiar to us through television as the setting for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. During its history, the city has become neatly divided in two – the Old Town of pre-18th century times, huddled under Castle Rock, and the New Town, with its fine Georgian architecture.
Why not wander down the famous Royal Mile or Princes Street, do some shopping, or simply just admire the architecture in this beautiful city?
Our included excursion takes us first to Queen’s View. This world famous viewpoint provides stunning vistas overlooking Loch Tummel and is said to have been named after Queen Victoria, following her visit to the area in 1866.
We continue to Pitlochry, with chance to view the famous salmon ladder. One of Scotland’s most popular holiday resorts, Pitlochry nestles in the hills of the Tummel Valley. It sits amidst lush wooded, craggy mountains, tumbling streams and lochs. Beautiful Victorian buildings are set against a backdrop of forest-covered hills.
We end the day with an included visit to Blair Castle. This Baronial-style castle has a long history and is the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl, boasting a stunning setting, surrounded by breathtaking Perthshire scenery. The gardens provide a leisurely walk and the castle is home to some fine examples of Scottish design, tradition and history.
